Adaptive Skills Training

What is Adaptive Skills Training?

Adaptive Skills Training (AST) is designed to enhance the participant’s overall quality of life. Individuals ages 3 to adult are able to access these services. Evidence-based procedures for assessing and shaping skills and behavior are utilized to target the following areas: functional communication, hygiene (toileting), self-help skills, safety skills (home/community), social skills, functional academics, and pre-vocational skills.

Our Process

A licensed educational psychologist performs a thorough evaluation to determine each participant’s level of need. The assessment report will provide an overview of the participant’s skill deficits, targeted behaviors, and overall needs. Based upon this evaluation a program is developed to build the skills required to perform activities of daily functioning.

Increasing Independence

Our qualified team of Case Managers, Registered Behavior Technicians (RBT), and paraprofessionals provide ongoing multidisciplinary support to ensure the implementation of quality services. Each participant’s progress is monitored through qualitative and quantitative data and monthly review. Our AST services are primarily provided within the home setting. Participation and input from the participant’s caretakers is an essential component in our service delivery.

Functional Academics

Functional academics is merely academics made functional designed to teach skills which allow each student to succeed in real-life situations at home, school, work and in the community.

Self Help Skills

Self care skills are one of the first ways that children develop the ability to plan and sequence task performance, to organise the necessary materials and to develop the refined physical control required to carry out daily tasks (e.g. opening lunch boxes, drawing or standing to pull up pants).

Social Skills

Social skills are the skills we use every day to interact and communicate with others. They include verbal and non-verbal communication, such as speech, gesture, facial expression and body language. A person has strong social skills if they have the knowledge of how to behave in social situations and understand both written and implied rules when communicating with others.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)

Neurodevelopmental disorders are a group of conditions that begin in the developmental period, typically early in life, and involve impairments in the growth and development of the brain or central nervous system. These disorders affect a person’s ability to function in areas such as emotional regulation, learning ability, self-control, and memory, which can impact social, academic, or occupational functioning. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are common neurodevelopmental disorders.

Applied Behavior Analysis

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy focuses on improving specific behaviors through a systematic approach of teaching new skills and reducing challenging behaviors. Our Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) conducts a Functional Behavior Assessment to identify areas of need and data-driven programs to enhance individual functioning.

Social Stamina provides ABA services within our clinical setting by a team of qualified professionals including licensed psychologists, state-credentialed teachers, behavior therapists, and trained paraprofessionals. Programs are designed to bolster social functioning, independent skill development, emotional regulation, self-advocacy, communication, and academic performance.

Hyperactive ADHD

Children with hyperactive ADHD often have trouble sitting still, waiting their turn, or holding back from blurting out answers. These behaviors can carry over into home life, making tasks and responsibilities difficult to complete. However, with specialized strategies, they can channel their energy and build more effective habits.

Inattentive ADHD

Those who are primarily inattentive may slip under the radar, as symptoms like daydreaming or missing details can go unnoticed. These students might overlook assignments, struggle to follow multi-step directions, or lose track of essential materials. Despite these challenges, positive reinforcement and structured support can help them harness their natural talents.

Common Behavioral Issues Related to ADHD

Because ADHD can lead to restlessness, impulsivity, or distractions, it can create disruptions in the classroom and strain interactions at home. Yet, with individualized approaches and a supportive environment, students can learn strategies to manage these behaviors and cultivate more harmonious relationships with peers, siblings, and caregivers.
